Week 5

Well, just finally getting around to working on week 5. Thought I would put a link to a picture I found on Flickr, of Coronation Street, of course!

Also, I have set up my del.icio.us account. That was fun. I found all kinds of stuff that I could spend all day looking at (but don't worry, I won't!) I like the folksonomy idea. Makes a lot of sense. I found that when I typed in my term "knitting patterns", I found a lot of good stuff. And the other tags that appeared were on very related things. When I did the same search in Google, I got some of the same sites, but got really general things on knitting in general, and not just on knitting patterns. Hmmmmm.

Tagging, social bookmarking and folksonomies is something that I would like to play around with a bit more. In fact, I will play around with all of the things we've done so far.... maybe this weekend.

Tagging, Social Bookmarking & Folksonomies

Unfortunately, I am behind! It's been a bit of a crazy week, with moving to a new job on Monday, cleaning up stuff at my desk, finishing those things that were on the back burner, etc. So I am glad to have the 2 week break (it is 2 weeks, isn't it??) to catch up.

I've been having fun and I've been learning which is the whole point. I've been doing the odd post, looking at colleague's blogs, checking my Bloglines account, playing with things a bit, etc.

So.... I would like to do my week 5 stuff next week, and I would also like to sign up for a Google Reader account, because one of my colleagues has done this, and she showed me hers, and I think I will like it better than Bloglines.

That's all for this week. See you next week.

My Coronation Street Story

Hammersister (see http://hammersister.blogspot.com/ ) just gave me a great idea. I will tell the story of my trip to Manchester, England in 2003 to go to the set of Coronation Street. It had been my dream for about 10 years. I couldn't wait for the day when I could go to the set and visit "The Street", maybe have my picture taken in the Rovers. I worked hard, saved up, and finally got a chance to go. I flew to London (alone, and I'm NOT a happy flyer!) and met up with my sister who flew in from Japan (she'd been living there). To make a long story only semi-long, after many planes, trains, automobiles, scuzzy hotel rooms, bad food, late nights, motion sickness, directionless wandering etc. etc. I FINALLY found Granada Studios in Manchester. I could barely contain my excitement and I skipped (yes, I actually skipped) up to the ticket window on the set... except it wasn't a ticket window. No. It was a security guard shack which had a big sign posted on the window:

THE SET OF CORONATION STREET HAS BEEN CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC SINCE 2001

'Scuse me while I dry my eyes

OK, I'm back... and will continue with another episode of Disaster on Coronation Street... at a later time

Wikis

Well, the wiki thing didn't go too well at first. I didn't clue in that I had to add my page to the sidebar. That'll teach me.... should read directions rather than just jumping in and blasting away at it.

Anyway, have figured it out now. But it seems the instructions were not correct. I couldn't just type the name of my page in square brackets, I had to actually choose "Link" from the toolbar and highlight my text to link it. I would assume others have encountered this issue?

Having lots of fun!!!

RSS feeds

I like the whole idea of RSS feeds. So convenient. I tried Bloglines, but my colleague has recommended Google Reader to me which I will also try.

There is so much to explore, I can't keep up!
